Electrical Design

Bill of material selection, overcurrent protection sizing, wire gauge, short circuit current rating calculations, and enclosure cooling assessments all get engineered before fabrication starts. What UL 508A Covers

UL 508A governs the construction of industrial control panels operating at 1000 volts or less, and it works alongside the National Electrical Code and, for cross-border projects, the Canadian Electrical Code and CSA C22.2 No. 286. Every component in the panel, from motor controllers and motor protection devices to terminal blocks, switches, and power supplies, has to meet UL standards under Appendix A rather than get selected on price alone. Spacing requirements prevent electrical arcing between components, control circuits are held to a maximum of 120 Vac or 250 Vdc, and enclosures have to comply with UL 50 or UL 50E for the environment they’re rated for, whether that’s general industrial use or a hazardous location.

Short circuit current rating, or SCCR, is one of the most misunderstood parts of the standard. It defines the highest fault current a panel can withstand without becoming a hazard, and it has to be calculated for the panel as a whole, not assumed from individual component ratings. Every panel we build carries a label with its electrical ratings and UL file number, the mark recognized by inspectors and authorities having jurisdiction across the U.S. and Canada.
